Gerundial Aspect and NP Movement
Abstract
The central assumption of this paper is a continuation of the investigation begun by Abney more than ten years ago, namely, DPs exhibit similar or identical behaviour to that of clauses. In earlier work, I have shown the existence of DP-internal NP movement. This paper is an attempt to investigate both the wider assumption and the particular finding in terms of the structure of gerunds in Bangla. Towards the former goal, I show how certain sentential aspectual properties are reflected inside the DP consisting of gerund structures; consequently, the gerund head is a nominal aspectual head. Towards the later goal, I show that the derivation of gerunds involves NP movement inside the DP.
